Not illustrated. 1852 Excerpt: ...the theory of the Chess-board) is, indeed, an honourable exception, for he does not recommend the taking the gambit-pawn. But the counter-gambit 2--with which P" he sought, followed by Cozio in later times, to replace 2-is qp premature, as the Variation will prove. As respects the best defence of all 2 j--, it has not hitherto been recommended by au thors, probably from their wishing not to obstruct the line of action of the Queen's Bishop. Instead of 2--some authors propose K 1 2--. They have not considered that the pawn p should be re served for the counter-gambit (see the fourth move of this opening), the only means whereby to entirely frustrate the effects of the Queen's gambit; that in pushing it only one square the second player is forced to adopt a weak and incomplete defence; and that, again, he thus locks up a piece (M) very necessary for occupying the square P3, from which it would attack the two important points, his Q5 and K4; added to which, the Queen's Bishop, in the commencement of this game, would be destitute of any acting power, whether placed on his B4 or N5. See, moreover, a direct proof of what q2 p2 MP3 / I here advance: t--2--3, --=-=-=7-( his best play, for against 92 p k or NB3 v h A NB3, QM3 QMS 3--4-ptr: --5-, and against 3 =5=-4-, demonstrating yet again how that, in these Queen's gambits, it is ill-timed to attempt to free the Bishop in the same manner as is done in the Royal Openings, on the Kings side of the board. But to go on with our example: kl b, t, NR3 NB2 QM3 _. 4., --=-5--and subsequently-, -, -. The NB3 or k opening, indeed, might be framed just as in the French or ordinary King's-Pawn-one openings, when the second player would be compelled, in order to amend his faulty position, to push his pawn p anot.
