Not illustrated. 1788 Excerpt: ...in the hands of an enterprising and ambitious subject, it might be made subservient to the worst of purposes. It is therefore now revived only pro bac vice, to officiate at a coronation, or the trial of a peer. By his commission to the first, he sits judicially himself, or appoints commissioners to act for him. He keeps his court in the King's palace, where he receiveth the petitions of all noblemen and others, who, by tenure or otherwise, claim to do service at the coronation of the King, for which he receives certain fees and allowances, doe by custom; and at the coronation he carries St Edward's crown. When he is appointed to preside at the trial of some Peer or Peeress of the realm for treason or felony, or some other great crime, he is attended from his house to the house of Lords by the Judges and Officers - Arms, in great state; where, the Peers being assembled, his commission is read, and a white rod, his emblem of office, is put into his hand with great ceremony; and then his Grace, for so he is then styled, takes the feat allotted for him as Lord High Steward, and proceeds to the trial of the person or persons arraigned before him. When the trial is over, his Grace breaks the rod, which ends his commission.
