This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 Excerpt: ...Accademia delle Belle Arte, under Bezzuoli and Servolini, and to attend the anatomy classes at the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, under Zanetti. Frederic Leighton studied in Paris during the year 1849; he copied Titian-and Correggio in the Louvre and drew diligently in the life 'school. At Frankfort he painted his first oil-painting of "Giotto found by Cimabue among the Sheep," and from 1850, for LEIGHTON. more than two years, he worked under Steinle; and, as he- himself has said, "obeyed that master so diligently that I am, in effect, his pupil in the fullest sense of the term." Underhis nfluence he worked at Rome in 1853, where he made life-long friends of Robert Browning and some of the younger spirits of the age, Giovanni Costa, James Knowles, George Mason, whose work in England he Bo much encouraged afterwards, and Sir Edward i John Poynter, P.R. A., whom he allowed to work in his studio almost as a pupil, and who found the counsel he then received a source of encouragement and assistance all through life. It was at this time that William Makepeace Thackeray saw him. and wrote of him to the young John Everett Millais, saying, "Here is a versatile young dog, who will run you close for the Presidentship one of these days." During these years he painted "Tybalt and Romeo," "The Death of Brunelleschi," a fine cartoon of the "Pest in Florence according to Boccacio," and "The Reconciliation of the Montagues and the Capulets," which was exhibited in Paris in 1855, and is now in America. This same year, 1855, the twenty-fifth of his age, FredericLeighton brought from Rome, where he had painted it, andv exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, his beautiful picture of " Cimabue's Ma.
