This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ...White does not spoil it. He does not add a word. In fact, the chief secret of good descriptive writing is knowing what to leave out. And that knowledge may be gained to some extent by study and practice. But a master is born as well as made, and no amount of study would enable any but a master to write such lines as--Oh, ye divine ether, and swift-winged breezes, And countless dimplings of the waves of the deep. Mediocrity might study Prometheus for a leash of generations, but would never get the grand manner. Inspiration is not to be learned. A tortoise may pass a sleeping hare, but a crow can never sing the song of the skylark. This matter of descriptive writing is one in which I have taken great interest, and to which I have devoted much study. My favourite masters are Gilbert White, Carlyle, Thackeray, and Erckmann and Chatrian. The Conscript and Selborne are veritable textbooks of the art. Add to them Catherine, Sartor Resartus, and some poetry, Shakespeare and Solomon first of all, then Milton and Spenser, and the student will need no further guides but practice, observation, and his own good sense and industry. But it is a difficult art, and one in which most of us can never be more than careful journeymen. Gilbert White's descriptive work is mostly confined to the natural history subjects. It is often said that this descriptive writing, as applied to Nature, is comparatively modern. In My Study Windows, Lowell (Walter Scott, is. 6d.), there are some interesting remarks upon this subject from which I propose to quote--WHITES "SELBORNE The love of Nature in and for herself, or as a mirror for the moods of the mind, is a modern thing... The author of the Book of Job is the earliest I know of who showed any profound sense of the moral.
