Not illustrated. 1890. Excerpt: ... IDOLATRY IN ISRAEL. 1 K1ngs 12: 25-33. "Then Jeroboam built Shechem in Mount Ephraim" etc. Idolatry was not the fruit of the divided kingdom: it had begun far back in the history of the nation and became ripe in the reign of their last king. It was an evil day for Jeroboam when he came under the influence of Solomon. The king, observing that he was a young man of marked character, "a mighty man of valor," as he is described, appointed him to high office, making him general superintendent of public works. Soon after the prophet announced to Jeroboam that the kingdom was to be divided and that he was to be king over the greater part. As this prophecy became known, he had to flee to Egypt, where he remained till the death of Solomon, when he returned home and, at Shechem, was made ruler of the ten tribes. Accepting the office, he assumed great responsibility. He was to be the champion of Jehovah. He had the power to fulfill his trust; he needed not to copy the bad example which had been set him; he could be his own master. Vast power was committed to his hands: the ten tribes, occupying the chief part of the country, had taken the proud name of Israel, claiming to have the national religion. He had their hearts; he could persuade them to stand with him for Israel's God. Was he equal to his opportunity? No; he too proved false, and so doomed his kingdom to destruction. The history suggests some truths which deserve our study. worse." "Covetousness, which is idolatry," grows. The more a man gets, the more he covets; the more he offends in Baal, the more all the good in him withers till he dies. The law is applied, in the Scriptures, to spiritual life. "Take heed, brethren, ... lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin." "Quench not the spirit.
