Not illustrated. 1892 Excerpt: ...bands (v. 3) broke God's, as truly as he who broke Christ's, and far more visibly and tangibly to the Jewish apprehension. His crime was visited, in a manner not to be mistaken, with the divine vengeance. It was not so palpably clear to the world that the unbeliever and rejecter of Christ would be punished. And here we see a feature of Oriental character. The British government cannot maintain its hold on India without retaining its palpable superiority, its diplomatic and military prestige. It deals with a people of feminine traits, a people which feels rather than reasons. It would, therefore, be a help to the Oriental mind to a conception of the relations of Christ to his spiritual kingdom, to have them brought into a concrete illustration by the temporal and spiritual kingdom of his great progenitor. Let no one fear, after projecting himself into the spirit and temperament of a Jew or an Asiatic, that he will blunt or dim his perception of the ulterior application of this Psalm by its immediate object. The uttermoBt parts of the earth (v. 8), in the exalted language of Hebrew poetry, would fit well the extended dominion of David, at a time when geography was a limited science, and petty rulers were known as kings. The parallel passages number hundreds. Strange as this poetic exaltation appears to us, it was quite natural to a Hebrew. Many a Syrian now thinks that the kings of Europe are largely occupied with the affairs of Lebanon, and all are envious of a land so valuable and so superior to their own.--Prof. Post. Zion.--This word is sometimes used to denote the whole of Jerusalem, but in its restricted meaning it was the name of the southeastern hill of Jerusalem. This hill was surrounded on all sides except the north by deep valleys having precipitou.
