"f W H E same men, which in heat of cons' I tention do hardly either speak or give M JL ear to Reason, being, after sharp and "bitter conflicts, retired to a calm remembrance of all their former proceedings; the causes "that brought them into quarrel, the course ' which their striving affections have followed, "and the issue whereunto they are come; may "peradventure, as troubled waters, in small time "of their own accord by certain easy degrees ' settle themselves again; and so recover that "clearness of well-advised judgment, whereby, "they shall stand at the length indifferent both "to yield and admit any reasonable satisfaction, "where before they could not endure with patiM ence to be gainsaid." This Sentiment of a writer of incomparable temper, judgment and eloquence, may serve to introduce the following reflexions on a controverted subject Hooker, Laws osEccl. Pol, Book VI. B which t which has been managed by some of both parties with too much warmth, not to have produced sooiS indiscretions. As passion and prejudice blind our reason; we are more likely to be discerning, just and impartial, when the fervour of debate has subsided. As it becomes all men frequently to review their own coaduct; it especially becomes those, whose public sentiments may have any influence on the interests of Religion, carefully to consider what they write or have written; so as to confirm what is safe and true in their opinions, and be as ready to retract their own errors against Truth or Ghariey, as to animadvert with candour on those of others.. It is not merely for the fake of having the last Word, much less with an intention of provoking a reply, and bringing on endless matter of dispute, that the Writer.
