This is a novel that is narrated by two characters, a sixteen-year-old girl in Tokyo and a writer living on an island off British Columbia. The teenage girl named Nao in Tokyo is constantly bullied in class and sees no escape from it. Her sense of isolation is even more deepened by a miserable family life. She has decided to take her own life but before that she wants to document the life of her great grandmother. Her great grandmother was a Buddhist nun who is over one hundred years old. Nao starts to find comfort and happiness in writing in her diary. In her diary entries, she addresses an imagined reader and a hopeful friend. On the other side of the Pacific, novelist Ruth, who is living on a small island off the coast of British Columbia, finds a cute little Hello Kitty lunchbox washed up on the beach. She assumes that it is possible debris from the tsunami that had struck Japan in 2011. She starts reading the diary and becomes engrossed in it. Once she reads the incomplete book, Ruth becomes infatuated with finding out how the story ended. A Tale for The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki was published by Random House in 2013.
