This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ...is not the result of time only, but of the wise admixture of metals at the time of production. In ornament we find a wise husbandry of the main expressive lines, curves, and contours, which add to the refinement of the smaller details. Animal forms in modelling are accentuated at such points as best express their characteristics. There is a sense of elimination of such details as do not aid the best expression of the main intention of the decorator s aim. The treatment of draperies is generally very satisfactory, leaving the rounded forms of the figures they clothe broadly suggestive, from which run ripples of melting and incisive folds into fine expressive and decorative outlines. Greek bronzes are well worthy of the closest study of all students, as from them may be learnt all that which constitutes style, technique, and design. In the practice of art it is not contended that they should merely copy, but endeavour in their own inventions or design to acquire an equal quality of refinement and distinction which is inseparable from a fine piece of art. It will suffice to indicate some of the treasures in the Bronzeeroom of the British Museum. Fragment of youthful Dionysos, about 1 foot 6 inches high. Head from Temple of Apollo, Cyrene. No. 267. Hypnos found in Perugia. Head of Sophocles, life size. Presented by the Earl of Arundel; brought from Constane Gnek Bmflles tinople in the 17th century. No. 1513. Pomona, on black marble base. Fine treatment of drapery. No. 271. Apollo, very fine in modelling, and Patina; about 7 inches high. No. 266. Head of Aphrodite (?), from Satada in Cappodocia. No. 265. Fragment of a leg with armour of a colossal statue of the very finest period, and one of the greatest treasures of the Museum. No. 848.
