(' Five Monarchies, ' vol. ii. p. 206, 2nd edition.) 11. From Edom. The parallel passage of Samuel has " Aram" (Syria) in the place of Edom. It is in favour of the reading " Aram," that the conquest of Edom has not yet been mentioned. ishai... slew of the Edomites... eighteen thousand. This is no doubt the victory assigned in 2 Sam. viii. 13 to David, and there wrongly described as a victory over the Syrians.
