That plain has been what Belgium is to Europe, the battlefield of Syria."--" Picturesoue Palestine." as soon as we had pitched our tents, a nice little boy from the Roman Catholic school who could speak French attached himself to us, wanting to show us about and earn backsheesh. Having visited Nazareth before we did not require a guide, but kept the little fellow near us to run messages. Our tents were placed close to a burial ground, and very shortly after we arrived the body of a boy belonging to the Greek Church was buried here. It was put in the grave without any coffin, and placed within little walls or rows of stones, other large stones being laid over it, but so as to rest on the walls, and not to touch the corpse. No one of the little assemblage seemed to grieve, and the earth was filled in, and all departed. The poor child was not, however, quite unmourned, for by half-past five the following morning women were sitting in a circle round his grave, singing a monotonous kind of chant and occasionally crying. This circle was added to by fresh arrivals, until when we started soon after six there were over twenty women present. I asked the Roman Catholic boy about the child that was buried, when he told me that he was only a little boy belonging to the "Greek Schismatical Church," and seemed perfectly indifferent to his fate upon this account. This is only a slight instance of the religious animosities to be found amongst different kinds of Christians in Palestine. There is something peculiarly repulsive in the exhibition of such feelings at Nazareth. But "graceless zealots" abound.
